GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY IN THE US
In the United States, about 40.5 percent of anthropogenic CO2 emissions was attributed to the combustion of fossil
fuels for the generation of electricity in 1998, the latest year for which all data are available.

NITROGEN OXIDES
Chief Causes for Concern

NOx
  • Is one of the main ingredients involved in the formation of ground-level ozone, which can trigger serious
    respiratory problems.
  • Reacts to form nitrate particles, acid aerosols, as well as NO2, which also cause respiratory problems.
  • Contributes to formation of acid rain.
  • Contributes to nutrient overload that deteriorates water quality.
  • Contributes to atmospheric particles, that cause visibility impairment most Noticeable in national parks.
  • Reacts to form toxic chemicals.
  • Contributes to global warming.

SULFUR DIOXIDE
Sulfur dioxide (also sulphur dioxide) is the chemical compound with the formula SO2. This important gas is the main
product from the combustion of sulfur compounds and is of significant environmental concern. SO2 is often described
as the "smell of burning sulfur. Since coal and petroleum often contain sulfur compounds, their combustion generates
sulfur dioxide.

NOTE: Burning of biomass such as wood pellets also emits CO2; however, unless there has been a change in land
use, it is considered that CO2 emitted from biomass is removed from the air by new growth, and therefore it should not
be included as a CO2 contributor.
Fossil fuels emissions data from
The United States Department of Energy
One ton of wood pellets equals

  • 120 gallons of heating oil
  •  170 gallons of propane
